Parent Infant Psychotherapy
What is Parent Infant Therapy?
Parent Infant Therapy is a specialised form of therapeutic support that focuses on strengthening the relationship between parents and their infants, typically from pregnancy through the first two to three years of life. This approach recognises that early interactions lay the foundation for a child’s emotional and social development.
Through a nurturing and collaborative process, parents and infants meet with a therapist to explore feelings, behaviours, and patterns that may influence their bond. The therapist may observe play, guide reflective conversations, or introduce gentle interventions to help parents better understand their infant’s cues and emotional needs. Parent Infant Therapy can be especially beneficial for families experiencing challenges such as postnatal depression, difficulties in attachment, unsettled infants, or transitions like adoption.
The goal is to foster a secure, responsive relationship that supports both the parent’s confidence and the infant’s wellbeing—helping both thrive during these formative years.
Can I have therapy before my baby is born?
Absolutely—Parent Infant Therapy (often referred to as PIP) can begin even before your baby is born. Engaging in therapy during pregnancy offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on your hopes, concerns, and expectations as you prepare to welcome your child. It can support you in processing any anxieties or past experiences that may influence your parenting journey and help you begin to build a positive, nurturing connection with your baby from the very start. This early support can lay a strong emotional foundation for both you and your infant as you embark on this new chapter together.
As a father to be can I come to appointments either with my partner or alone?
Certainly. As a father-to-be, you are welcome to attend Parent Infant Therapy sessions either together with your partner or on your own. The therapeutic space is designed to support all parents and caregivers, recognising that everyone’s experience and needs are unique. Whether you wish to share concerns, explore your own feelings about becoming a parent, or discuss ways to strengthen your future bond with your child, your participation is valued and encouraged. Attending alone or as a couple can both be beneficial—what matters most is that you feel comfortable and able to engage openly in the process.
