Working with Depression
Depression can touch individuals at any stage of life, quietly undermining their energy, motivation, and sense of hope. Working therapeutically with depression involves creating a compassionate, non-judgmental space where individuals can express their feelings openly, without fear or shame. Therapy acknowledges that depression is not simply a matter of “snapping out of it”— it is a complex, multifaceted experience that affects thoughts, emotions, physical wellbeing, and relationships.
Therapeutic approaches to depression are tailored to each person's needs and circumstances. Sessions should help, build awareness of their emotional landscape, and develop practical coping strategies for difficult days. For some, exploring the roots of low mood—such as unresolved grief, past traumas, or ongoing stressors—can be central to the work. For others, learning skills to re-engage with daily activities, nurture self-compassion, and strengthen support networks is most beneficial.
Ultimately, therapy aims not only to alleviate symptoms of depression but also to empower individuals to rediscover meaning, resilience, and connection in their lives.
